Compare Business Model Variants

Create a variant of your canvas and compare two business models side-by-side with data.

What you’ll learn

How to create a business model variant and compare it against your original — so you can make pivot-or-persevere decisions with data instead of gut feel.

Before you start

You need at least one canvas with a completed stress-test. If you haven’t done that yet, start here.

Steps

Step 1 — Open your existing canvas

Navigate to the canvas you want to explore alternatives for. This becomes your baseline for comparison.

Step 2 — Create a variant

Ask LEANSpark to create a variant. A variant is a copy of your canvas with one or more key changes — a different customer segment, a different pricing model, a different solution approach.

Tell LEANSpark what you want to change: “What if I targeted enterprise teams instead of freelancers?” or “What if this was a one-time purchase instead of a subscription?”

Step 3 — Stress-test the variant

Run the same assessment on your new variant. This gives you comparable data across both models.

Step 4 — Compare dimensions

Look at both assessments side by side. Where do they diverge? Which model has lower risk in the dimensions that matter most to you?

What to look for

  • Where the variants diverge tells you what’s actually different about the two approaches. If both models have the same red dimensions, the change you made might not address the real risk.
  • Pivot-or-persevere with data. Instead of debating whether to pivot, you now have two assessed models to compare. The data won’t make the decision for you, but it’ll make the decision clearer.
  • Variants compound. You’re not limited to two. Create multiple variants to explore the solution space systematically.
